Luke's week included Jose, spur of the moment basketball game, and counseling success...
I think the best news I heard in our conversation with Luke today was that he has started his counseling sessions and absolutely LOVES his counselor. She is a woman from the States that recently lost her husband and decided to go on a mission. So she is meeting with him online from Buenos Aires. I think it helps that she too is serving a mission and could relate so much to him. She has loosely diagnosed Luke with OCD Scrupulosity. OCD is a type of OCD that relates to religion and morality. People who experience scrupulosity have a “fear of being guilty of religious, moral, or ethical failure..." I'm so glad he is getting help so he can mentally feel better and be able to cope with the rigorous missionary life. He sounded so hopeful and excited about the changes he is already feeling.
He also had great news that they have a brother who is committed to baptism!!! He said they heard there was a 11 year old girl from a part member family who they could possibly teach. They had to go an hour to get to her house. He said it felt like they were in the jungle. They finally got there and found out she was already a member! UGH! They traveled so far and felt like it was for nothing. BUT THEN suddenly their dad came home from work. He looked exhausted and like he didn't want to be bothered at first. But soon he joined in their discussion. His name is Jose, but the funny thing is a member told them his name was Francisco. So the whole night they called him Francisco! :) The next day his wife called them to let them know that wasn't his name! :) ha ha ha. It reminded me of a time that Matt called a guy from our ward the wrong name the whole night of a party and it wasn't until I ran into his wife the next day that she asked me to let my husband know that her husband's name wasn't Steve :) ha ha ha. So things went well and at the end of the discussion Luke felt prompted to ask Jose to be baptized and he accepted! They met with him again this week and things are progressing well.
After they left the house they it was dark and they felt like they were walking through the jungle. They got to the bus stop around 8:30 and were a little concerned they would be home late because it was an hour drive. Well they waited and waited and got more concerned. The family mentioned, oh ya sometimes the bus just doesn't come! Uh Oh! But after 45 minutes of waiting and wondering if they were going to be sleeping in the jungle, it finally did come! And yes they were very late but they made it!
Luke let loose a little this week and when they were passing by some boys playing basketball in a church outside basketball court, he joined them! His companion Elder Camacho asked Luke who the greatest player is in the NBA and Luke told him it is Lebron James. Elder Camacho said "Elder Rose you were Lebron James out there today!" :) Luke was on fire and really impressed all the boys on the court. He even got a few phone numbers out of the spontaneous game :) Glad he can be himself sometimes too :)
It was so great to see Luke's smiling face and know that he is working hard and loving the work. I love that boy!
Now we will keep Jose in our prayers as they continue to teach him and help him prepare for baptism.
